But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you- Matthew 6:33
The word of God emphasises that the most important pursuit in our faith walk is the pursuit of the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. This is God’s will for every one of His children.
By definition, seeking is an action-oriented term that requires “going after,” “pursuing,” “looking for,” “being in pursuit of,” and more.
If you are uncertain about what God’s plans and purpose are for your life, start with Matthew 6:33 and thoroughly study, learn, gain insight and understanding of it and make a conscious and intentional decision to live out this verse for the rest of your life. When you understand what Jesus is saying in this verse, many things will make sense to you. In your pursuit to understand and live out this verse, your purpose in life will be revealed to you, and your relationship with God will be deepened. Most importantly, your knowledge of God will increase as you do everything to earnestly know and grow in Christ.
This verse is a lifelong journey suited for serious believers of Christ who are committed to living it out daily. It is not for those who are seasonal Christ followers and only choose to follow when life is good. We must not wait until we reach heaven before we know about the Kingdom of God nor should we wait until we are near the end of our lives. This is the season, this is the moment, we as children of God must begin to cultivate a mindset of the Kingdom of God.

Our pursuit of the Kingdom must be stronger than our pursuit of wealth and all other worldly possessions. This pursuit must not be seasonal but it must be real, and authentic and it should be part of our daily, weekly and monthly goals.
Once we prioritize the Kingdom of God and everything that comes with it, we set ourselves to be intentional, to think about the things that are important to God.
When our hearts and minds are completely focused and centred on the Kingdom of God, we become intentional, about walking in God’s ways, characters, and attitudes. With this, we can be assured that we are on the right path to pleasing God.
You might ask, how do I seek the Kingdom of God? Below are some actions you can take:
- Surrender your life completely to God (this includes the messy part and trust that He will guide you on the right path.
- Keep your heart focused on the Lord at all times. Ask Him to purify and sanctify your heart (true growth begins when our hearts are clean before God)
- Ask questions about God and about His Kingdom. We must be like a child, freely asking questions that will help us to think deeper and know God better.
- Prioritize God in your day-to-day life, include him in everything
- Commit yourself to know God through His word ( this will teach you about him, His Kingdom, and His heart)
- Learn how to discern (hear) God’s voice so you can obey all instructions He gives you (on time)
- Choose God’s ways every time regardless of the challenges you may face. Know and understand God’s standards in all areas of your life- Identity, health, family, finances, relationships etc. Never compromise on these things. It will be hard but stick to his standards at all cos. It will yield many rewards and blessings for you.
In essence, always prioritize God before anything else. Give him the first of your time daily, and commit all to him even when you don’t understand what’s going on. He does, so trust him.
When we seek God’s kingdom, the other aspects of life– such as worldly possessions (money, houses, businesses etc), will then follow naturally. However, we must not just seek God because of what we will get from Him but from a genuine longing to know Him deeper like a child who seeks a closer connection with their father. This desire will help us to develop a stronger relationship where we communicate with our Heavenly Father freely and easily! Doing this will cause our hearts to be unattached to the things of this world that people count as ultimate success.
Seeking God’s Kingdom first will help us to remember our true home as Christians – God’s Beautiful Kingdom.
Prayer:
Father, give me a heart that seeks your Kingdom first, in all things.
