Trusting in the Lord

Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock- Isaiah 26:4

To fully trust, is to consistently rely and depend on something or someone irrespective of the wavering systems of life.

Trusting can be hard, especially when you have been doing it for a long time and it seems like nothing is working or it appears that there is no physical evidence to show for it. But, as believers of Christ, the idea of trust is that we let go completely and accept that the one who created us, God, the one who sees us daily, will work all things out for our good and will reward us with great blessings (Jeremiah 17:7).

To trust is to rely on and believe in what you do not yet see. It is to believe, that one day there will be a positive result that will yield a physical manifestation of God’s power and strength.

Every season we go through requires consistent trust in God. It requires us to trust by being persistent in the things of God, hoping that one day a door of great opportunities will be opened unto us.

We must trust in the process of life, walking according to the pattern of destiny that God has set before us. Believing that the one who takes great care of the lilies in the fields and the birds in the air and who feeds and cares for them at the appointment time will also take great care of us (Matthew 6:26-32).

To benefit from the output result of trusting God, we must fix our eyes on him no matter what (Hebrews 12:2). We should not compromise in any stage of His process for our life. This means, following His ways and doing what He says.  Those who trust in God can never be put to shame (Romans 10:11).

To fully trust in God is to depend totally on him, meaning, there’s no other plan. The Lord is a strength, shield and help to those who trust him with their heart (Psalm 28:7). When the fear of the world comes, we can put our trust in God, he will protect us (Psalm 56:3). He is the one that comes at our side to hold our right hand and say to us “Fear not, I am the one who helps you” (Isaiah 41:13). God is an everlasting rock that will never fail (Isaiah 26:4)

There is a way in which we ought to trust God. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us a clear guideline on how to do this. If we want to reap the outcome of trusting God, we must follow what he has declared for us. Below is a guideline to trusting God according to Proverbs 3:5-6.

How do we trust in the Lord:

  1. With all our heart (vs 5):

This means that there is no plan b on our agenda. It means that we absolutely rely on God coming through for us and that we are fully rested and relaxed in him.

Sometimes, this step is not easy to follow. But the art of trusting God with all our hearts can be cultivated until it becomes our lifestyle. The best place to do that is in the presence of God and the best person to help us accomplish it is the Holy Spirit.

Trying to cultivate a spiritual habit without the help of the Holy Spirit will be a wasted effort. Similarly, trying to trust God with all our heart without the help of his Spirit, will only hold for a short while and then when the waves of life come, compromising will start to come in. This compromise can lead us to formulate plans b, c, d and so on.

The sincere move of God in the life of a believer starts with a yielded heart. Trusting God is part of the process that forms this yielded heart.

God is holy; therefore, our hearts must surrender towards holiness and also need to be holy to allow him to come and dwell in us (1 Peter 1:16)

2. Lean not on your own understanding and in all your ways acknowledge God (vs 6):

In all things, small or big we should also acknowledge God. Even when we think we know the answer to something, the bible advises us to revere God and check with him. As a result, showing our yielded and trusting heart for him. Let God be the first person you consult before you consult anyone else about a matter.

Don’t assume you have it figured out. Do not assume that you know all the criteria to look for when making any form of decision, i.e. looking for a job or starting ministry work. Even after you have done all your research, bring them all back to God and ask him, “Is this the path you are setting before me now?”. As children of God, we should not assume that any path is the right path just because it feels or looks good.

The main reason to acknowledge God in all our ways is so that he can direct and guide our path and tell us which way to go. Proverbs 4:18-22 tells us that “the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day”.

I have had the privilege of hearing testimonies of people who, through their trust and hope in God, have had victories upon victories of how God came through for them. They went through the trials of life and they are still standing today. They can boldly and confidently testify of how God came through for them (Revelation 12:11).

Conclusion

Trusting God will take persistent and unwavering passion for him. It is the art of waiting on God. Waiting to see what great things he will do.

When we make up our minds to trust in the Lord with our hearts and not lean on our own understanding so he can lead us, we do not need to worry about anything. Sometimes, after waiting on God on a matter, his answer could be a “no” or a “yes”. Remember, God’s no is a great blessing that can save you a decade of challenges. Be grateful and thankful when you receive the result of trusting in God.

When the full weight of our hearts rests on the word of God, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. The Lord keeps in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him because they trust in him (Isaiah 26:3).
